Government programs fueling the Employee Retention Tax Credit

Cares Act -2020

Regardless of small businesses that have already taken out a PPP, the ERTC credit through the CARES Act can be claimed against 50 percent of qualified wages paid, up to $10,000 per employee annually for wages paid between March 13 and December 31, 2020.

Consolidated Appropriations Act 2021

Employers who quality for the year 2021 regardless of those that have already taken out a PPP can claim a credit against 70% of the qualified wages paid. Additionally, the wages that qualify for the credits are increased to $10,000 per employee per quarter.

American Rescue Plan Act 2021

For 2021 tax year claims, the credit remains at 70% of qualified wages up to $10,000 limit per quarter meaning a maximum of $7,000 per employee per quarter. The employer for this year can claim $7,000 per quarter per employee for the first three quarters. Also, with the Recovery Startup Businesses program, employers may be eligible to take a credit of up to $50,000 for the third and fourth quarters in addition to the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
